VISION STICK POLE CAMERA

The Vision Stick from Angionlaz is a telescoping pole mounted camera with an intergraded video monitor. The system allows users to safely view areas through holes as small as 1.5 inches in diameter. It is designed to be used in the tactical environment.

The Visions Stick’s intelligent design was apparent upon its arrival. The system includes a substantial plastic carrying case with an integrated battery charger which allows charging while stored. The Vision Stick expands from 4 feet to 10.5 feet and includes a shoulder strap. It is equipped with swivel tip which houses an IR camera and IR illuminator on the end. The tip also has a color camera and light on the side. Both are effective at any light level. The user can select cameras via a switch on the operators end. Both are viewed on a small LCD monitor which can be handheld, wrist mounted or attached mid length on the pole. The system also has the option of wireless video transmission.

My first step of the evaluation process included determining the tactical and practical applications. The systems ability to view in confined areas such as attics and under beds is remarkable. In a tactical operation, searches become much safer. Any sensible operator would rather locate the armed suspect hiding in an attic with the camera, verses placing his head in the intruder’s sights. During the evaluation, the Vision Stick was used in narcotic search warrant operations and provided contraband and hidden compartments. The system did improve the efficiency of the search operation. I also conducted building clearing operations while using the Vision Stick. I did find that it was useful in viewing around corners. The side mounted color video camera was also useful in inspecting the inside of door frames for IEDs prior to entering.

I found that the Vision Stick was constructed to withstand reasonable use and abuse. Its operation is so simple that any operator can use it. During actual field use the operators found it to be cumbersome and desired the ability to move the swivel head via remote control verses manual placement. However, the price of the system already exceeds $5000 and the addition of such features would certainly increase the price. I do recommend the purchase of the optional under the door viewer with the system. The system makes contraband searches easier but could save the life on an operator when searching for armed suspects. That makes the system worth the purchase price.
